It is soft enough to be easily fashioned using simple hand tools, but also relatively durable and strong. It also floats well on water, which made it easy to transport to distant markets throughout the country. States such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, which are situated around the Great Lakes, all boasted expansive pine forests and large rivers, facilitating the transportation of logs into the Great Lakes and onwards toward international shipping hubs.
