First of all, nowadays, we have no more any barrier between any coutries in the world except for some dangerous countries. There are diverse chances to meet someone from a different country. When we meet them in Korea or out of korea, we can have a conversation by speaking English as a global language. This will be the best advantage of knowing English.
Second of all, some countries use English as a standard of ability. As you know, Asian countries are usally serious for the amount of study for students. English will be the main subject what students must study. For example, In Korea, there are 5 subjects of an entering exam for a university; Korean, Math, Science, Society, and English. Although English is not a mother tongue for Koreans, they have to study it for entering universities, even for getting a job. I do not think this is good situation for society but can be the evidence why I insist Enlgish is an important language.
There are other global languages like Chinese or French. However, English is usually referred as the most useful language in the world. Therefore, nobody can insist that English is not as important as what we expect it.
