I think in this situation a child who is 6 1/2 years old should not be told the truth.
He is still young and even he is told the truth he can not judge how bad this situdation is.
What good things will be happen if he knows it ? Does his mom can rely on his child even he is 6 1/2 ? I don't think so.
If he is old enough to know I think the child needs to know about it. When his mom can have a conversation with his child and if they can help each other I think it will be helpful for his family to endure, but not now.
Family education is really important during his age, so I think in his age it is better only to listen and know the positive situation.
